Manolo's Madrid — Free Walking Tour · 120 min

1

Plaza Mayor

This is where it all begins. Most people just take a selfie and leave, but look up — the frescoes on the Casa de la Panadería are stunning and almost nobody notices them. This square has seen bullfights, executions, markets, and football.

💡 Best photos from the southwest corner in the morning light.

2

Mercado de San Miguel

A beautiful iron-and-glass market from 1916. It's become very touristy and overpriced, but the building itself is worth seeing. The vermouth on tap is decent and reasonably priced.

💡 Avoid the seafood stalls — tourist markup is brutal.

3

Calle Mayor and the assassination attempt

We stop where someone tried to assassinate King Alfonso XIII on his wedding day in 1906. A bomb was thrown from a balcony hidden in a bouquet of flowers. The king survived.

💡 Look for the small plaque on the wall.

4

Plaza de la Villa

One of the oldest squares in Madrid. Three buildings from three different centuries, all in one tiny square. It's always empty because tourists don't know about it.

💡 Perfect for photos without crowds.

5

Royal Palace

The exterior and the Sabatini Gardens are free. The gardens at sunset are one of the best-kept secrets in Madrid — golden light, almost no people, incredible views.

💡 If you only do one thing after my tour, go to the Sabatini Gardens at sunset.

6

Opera and Sol

We end near Puerta del Sol. Kilometer zero of Spain — every road in the country is measured from this point. It's always chaotic and crowded, but it's important to see it once.

A good bar tonight?

The sherry bar with sawdust on the floor

Like stepping into 1920s Madrid. Sherry served from old barrels, no music, no photos allowed.

Order: Sherry wine
Vibe: Old-school, atmospheric, cash only

Where should I have breakfast tomorrow?

A local café

Order a tostada con tomate y aceite — the real Madrid breakfast. Add a café con leche.

The hipster neighborhood with great street art, independent shops, and vintage clothing. Have lunch at any place full of locals.
